Lost in Translation is a film I revisit multiple times a year. It has a way of transporting you to a moment outside of time and evokes a feeling of being lost that no other film has done.
The way Sofia Coppola tells us what these characters are feeling without any words being spoken is a true masterclass. Long, still shots of the actors just feeling the space, sitting in emotion is truly touching.
She finds a way to show intimacy without the characters actually being intimate. It’s true connection. Something that will stick with you forever.

Derek Cianfrance
Derek Cianfrance has a way of visually telling stories that makes it feel as close to real as possible. You it with these characters like a fly on the wall as they go through the most tense moments of their lives.
The way he uses lighting elevates this in every way. It feels natural yet thematic. The vibrant color could easily make it feel like a music video instead of a character study, but he balances it so well by using it to highlight the surroundings. He lets the location tell as much of the story as the characters in it.
